Accelerating Multi-Lumen Tooling with Metal 3D Printing at Lasermed Technologies

At LaserMed Technologies, we’re always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of what's possible in medical manufacturing—and our metal 3D printing capabilities are doing just that. We recently had the opportunity to share our process with Steve of Chamfr, who stopped by to see how we’re reshaping timelines and surface quality expectations for complex tooling projects.

Watch as Garrett Kaiser explains how LaserMed’s metal 3D printing is transforming multi-lumen extrusion tooling—cutting lead times from 6 weeks to just a few days. If you're in medical device R&D, this is one you won't want to miss.

From 6 Weeks to 1 Day: Tooling at the Speed of Innovation

Traditional machining methods for complex multi-lumen extrusion dies often involve long lead times—up to six weeks in many cases. At LaserMed, we’re able to reduce that down to as little as 1 day, with most projects averaging just 4–5 days. By going directly from a SolidWorks file to metal print using our Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) technology, we eliminate time-consuming steps and speed up R&D cycles dramatically.

This means faster iteration, reduced bottlenecks in development, and a significant competitive edge for medical device companies pushing to get their products to market.

Precision Surface Finishing, Tailored for Medtech

We know surface quality is just as important as speed—especially in medical applications. Our tooling comes off the printer with a surface finish of ~400 µin Ra, and we can post-process that down to 10–20 µin Ra, depending on the application. That range includes bead-blasting to 100–200 µin Ra for a clean, uniform finish and further refinement as needed for ultra-smooth results.

The result? Production-grade tools with tight tolerances, complex geometries, and excellent surface finishes—without the delay.
